Hippocrates once said “walking is a man’s best medicine”. I strongly believe it is true.
There are tons of research and reports confirming the benefit of taking 15-30 minutes for a walk every day. Anuradha mentioned in a post “10 Things That Happen to Your Body If You Walk Every Day” that walking daily is good for your brain, your eyes, your hearts, your lung, your pancreas, your digesting system, your muscles, your bones/joints, your back, and your mind.
Taking a walk is physically easy but not everyone can do it every day. There are so many excuses until we have a health issue. Nowadays, people are busy with their jobs, family, social media, etc.; and our lives are under a great pressure. So many people sacrifice their health to get money and then take the money to the hospital to fix the health. Many times, money can’t buy health, Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple, for example. He had a lot of money and fame but he could not survive from pancreatic cancer.
So, in order to succeed in life, we have to take care of our body first. A simple way of taking care the body is to take a walk for 15-30 minutes every day. Personally, every morning, I take around 20 minutes for a walk. I enjoy walking in early morning (5.30 am) with my MP3 player and headphone (not earphone, I don’t like earphone because it hurts my ears). I don’t listen to music while walking; I listen to educational/inspirational materials, thereby I turn my walking time into learning time.
If you can’t set aside 15-30 minutes for a walk, there are other ways to consider such as walk to work/school instead of drive, use public transportation, choose where to park your car, if possible, so that you can take a longer walk to your office, take the stair instead of lift/elevator, don’t sit too long (stand up and take a short walk around your office every 45 minutes if possible), etc.
To get motivated and disciplined, you should track how much you walk every day. There are so many free apps on smart phones that can count your steps, your walking distance/time.
Finally, keep in mind that there is nothing more important than your health. Take care of your health first, your success will follow.
